The south side is known for their high poverty and crime rate levels. The Gallagher family, who are constantly battling financial instability, bringing a roof to their head through low paying jobs, scams, and even illegal activities. The show does not hide the realities of poverty. It demonstrates how it impacts every aspect of the Gallaghers' lives. It also explores the sad nature of poverty, showing how difficult it can be for families like the Gallaghers to break free from their economic conditions. However, the show has faced criticism for its representation of poverty as well. Some argue that it often leans into stereotypes, and that its comedic approach can be seen as making fun of the poverty.
Overall, Shameless has lots of representation. Whether is the relationship of 2 gay lovers, to raising a pair of mixed twins, to getting diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Even with lots of representation, many still see a problem in the idea of stereotypes shown in the show.
